Gholam Reza Azhari

Gholam Reza Azhari (1912-5 November 2001) was Prime Minister of Iran from 6 November 1978 to 4 January 1979, succeeding Jafar Sharif-Emami and preceding Shapour Bakhtiar.

Biography[]

Gholam Reza Azhari was born in Shiraz, Iran in 1912, and he studied at the war college in Iran and the National War College in Washington DC, United States during the 1950s. In 1971, Azhari became the Chief-of-Staff of the Iranian military, and he was chosen to form a military government in Iran in November 1978 when the Iranian Revolution broke out. He resigned after suffering from a heart attack in January 1979, and he retired from the army in February. Azhari went into exile in the United States after the revolution, dying in McLean, Virginia in 2001.
