Gheorghe Mihail (13 March 1887-2 February 1982) was a Romanian general who served as Chief of Staff of the Romanian Army from August 23 to September 6 in 1940 and 23 August 1944 to 12 October 1944 during World War II.
Biography[]
Gheorghe Mihail was born on 13 March 1887 in Braila, Romania, and he served in the Romanian 34th Infantry Regiment during World War I. He was given the Order of Michael the Brave for his bravery, and in October 1933 he became head of the Information Department of the General Staff. On 23 August 1944, Mihail was appointed Chief-of-Staff of the Romanian Army during World War II. On 12 October 1944 he resigned from his post due to his disagreement with King Michael I of Romania's new government, and he was imprisoned on 20 January 1948 for treason. He was forced into hard labor until 1957, when he was released in an amnesty. He died on 2 February 1982 at the age of 94.
