Germania was a region of Central Europe at the time of the Roman Republic and Roman Empire. Home to the Germanic tribes, the region was untamed wilderness during the Pax Romana, and the Romans failed in their many attempts to pacify the region, whose tribes defeated the Romans at Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. In the first century BC, the region had a population of five million people, and the region would later be home to migrating tribes such as the Alemanni, Franks, Saxons, and Goths, who would ultimately conquer the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD.
