German federal election, 2017

Results of the election

The German federal election, 2017 was held in Germany on 24 September 2017 to elect members of the 19th Bundestag. The Christian democratic CDU/CSU coalition under Angela Merkel remained the ruling party of Germany, but both the CDU/CSU and the Social Democratic Party of Germany lost a large amount of seats to the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany, which rose to become the third-largest party after previously having no representation in the government. The Free Democratic Party of Germany also gained 80 seats in the government, having also previously had no representation. No party won an outright majority in any state, and the election saw the SPD face its worst election results since the end of World War II, winning just 20% of the vote.
