The German Communist Party (DKP) is a communist political party in Germany, founded in 1968 as a reconstituted Communist Party of Germany, which had been banned due to its revolutionary activities. The party received directives and secret funding from the Socialist Unity Party of Germany during the Cold War, and the party remained on the political fringe; the government of West Germany decided not to ban the DKP because it did not pose a threat. After the end of the Cold War, many DKP members defected to the Party of Democratic Socialism, and the party had a mere 4,000 members in 2008.
