Georgiy Feodorovich Zakharov (23 April 1897-1957) was a General of the Soviet Red Army who led the Bryansk Front, 2nd Guards Army, 2nd Belorussian Front, and the 4th Guards Army during World War II.
Biography[]
Georgiy Feodorovich Zakharov was born on 23 April 1897 in Shilov, Russia, and he served in the Imperial Russian Army during World War I and in the Red Army during the Russian Civil War. In 1933, he graduated from the Frunze Military Academy and then from the General Staff Academy in 1939. From 1939 to 1941, he served as chief of staff of the Ural Military District, and he led the Bryansk Front from October to November 1941 during Operation Barbarossa. In October 1942, he became deputy commander of the Stalingrad Front, and he led the 2nd Guards Army during the fighting in the Ukraine in 1943. In 1944, he was given command of the 2nd Belorussian Front for Operation Bagration, but he was demoted to command the 4th Guards Army after the front's actions were deemed inadequate during the offensive. His army took part in the crossings of the Danube River into Hungary and the Siege of Budapest, and he ended the war as deputy commander of the 4th Ukrainian Front. He held various commands in Russia before his death in 1957.
