The Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic was a republic of the Soviet Union that existed from 1921 to 1991. The Georgian SSR's capital was the city of Tbilisi, and it had a population of 5,400,841 people in 1989. The republic was established after the Russian SFSR defeated the Democratic Republic of Georgia during the Russian Civil War, and the Georgian SSR was incorporated into the USSR upon its formation in 1922. On 18 November 1989, the Georgian SSR declared its sovereignty over Soviet laws, and it became the "Republic of Georgia" on 14 November 1990. On 9 April 1991, the republic became independent upon the dissolution of the USSR, and the constitution of the new republic was ratified on 24 August 1995, officially ending the Georgian SSR.
