
George William "A.E." Russell (10 April 1867-17 July 1935) was an Anglo-Irish nationalist and writer.
Biography[]
George William Russell was born in Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland in 1867; he came from an Anglo-Irish family. He worked as a draper's clerk before becoming a union organizer, and he became an able lieutenant to Horace Plunkett. He became a spokesman for Plunkett's IAOS union, and he supported Irish nationalism, opposing John Redmond's compromise on Home Rule in 1917 and joining the anti-partition Irish Dominion League in 1919. Russell also became a writer, specializing in mysticism and theosophy. He was unhappy with the Irish Free State during his last years, and he moved to England in 1932 and died in Bournemouth in 1935.
