George Trevelyan

George Trevelyan (20 July 1838 – 17 August 1928) was Chief Secretary for Ireland from 9 May 1882 to 23 October 1884, succeeding Lord Frederick Cavendish and preceding Henry Campbell-Bannerman.

Biography[]

George Otto Trevelyan was born in Rothley Temple, Lancashire, England on 20 July 1838, the son of Charles Trevelyan, and he graduated from Cambridge before being sent to India as a civil servant in 1862. In 1865, he was elected the Liberal Party MP for Tynemouth and North Shields, and, from 1868 to 1886, he served as MP for Hawick Burghs. From 1880 to 1882, he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty, and, from 1882 to 1884, he served as Chief Secretary for Ireland. He went on to serve as Secretary for Scotland in 1886 and from 1892 to 1895, and he died in 1928 at the age of 90.
