George Thomson, Baron Thomson of Monifieth

George Thomson, Baron Thomson of Monifieth (16 January 1921 – 3 October 2008) was the Labour Party MP for Dundee East from 17 June 1952 to 1 March 1973, succeeding Thomas Cook and preceding George Machin.

Biography[]

George Thomson was born in Penn, Buckinghamshire, England on 16 January 1921, and he served in the Royal Air Force from 1941 to 1946. From 1946 to 1953, he served as assistant editor and then editor of Forward, a socialist magazine. He was elected to Parliament in 1952 as a Labour Party MP, and he served as Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs from 1967 to 1968, Minister without Portfolio from 1968 to 1969, and European Commissioner for Regional Policy from 1973 to 1977. He died in London in 2008 at the age of 87.
