
George Theodore Mickelson (23 July 1903-28 February 1965) was the Republican Governor of South Dakota from 7 January 1947 to 2 January 1951, succeeding Merrell Q. Sharpe and preceding Sigurd Anderson.
Biography[]
George Theodore Mickelson was born in Selby, South Dakota in 1903, the son of a Norwegian immigrant father. He practiced law in Selby before serving as Walworth County State's Attorney from 1933 to 1936, in the State House from 1937 to 1943, as Attorney General from 1943 to 1947, as Governor from 1947 to 1951, and as a district court judge from 1953 until his death in 1965. His son George S. Mickelson would go on to serve as Governor, and his grandson Mark Mickelson served as Speaker of the House from 2017 to 2018.
