
George March Hinkle (13 November 1801-9 November 1861) was an early Mormon leader who commanded their militia during the 1838 Mormon War.
Biography[]
George March Hinkle was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1801, and he joined the Mormon movement in 1832. He sat on the church's high council in Far West, Missouri, and he was commissioned as a colonel in the state militia, and he commanded the militia in the predominantly Mormon Caldwell County. During the 1838 Mormon War, he betrayed Joseph and Hyrum Smith to Major-General Samuel D. Lucas' men, and he was excommunicated on 17 March 1839. In 1840, he founded his own Mormon denomination, and he led the dissenting group until his death in 1861.
