
George Izard (21 October 1776-22 November 1828) was the Democratic-Republican Governor of the Arkansas Territory from 4 March 1825 to 22 November 1828, succeeding James Miller and preceding John Pope.
Biography[]
George Izard was born in Richmond upon Thames, England in 1776, the son of US Senator Ralph Izard. He attended military academies in England, Germany, and France and served in the US Army, overseeing the construction of Castle Pinckney in South Carolina, serving as an aide-de-camp to Alexander Hamilton, and serving as the commanding Major-General of the Northern Army near Lake Champlain during the War of 1812. After the war, he served as Governor of the Arkansas Territory from 1825 until his death in 1828.
