George Helmy

George Samir Helmy (27 October 1979-) was a Democratic US Senator from New Jersey from 9 September 2024 to 3 January 2025, succeeding Bob Menendez and preceding Andy Kim.

Biography[]

George Samir Helmy was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1979 to a Coptic Egyptian family. He worked as a business operations manager for UPS from 2001 to 2013, as a staffer to US Senators Frank Lautenberg and Cory Booker, and as chief of staff to Governor Phil Murphy from 2019 to 2023. Helmy was a Republican until 2011, and he did not become a Democrat until 2024. After leaving the governor's office, he served as executive vice president and chief external affairs and policy officer at RWJBarnabas Health and as a commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. On 14 August, Governor Murphy appointed Helmy to the Senate to serve as a caretaker following Bob Menendez's resignation.
