
George Gray (1725-1800) was a member of the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly and its Speaker in 1783.
Biography[]
George Gray was born in Blockley Township, Pennsylvania (now West Philadelphia) in 1725, the son of George Gray. His father founded the Gray's Ferry Tavern and Inn and took over operation of Grays Ferry, only to retire in 1740 and leave the family business to his sons Robert and the 15-year-old George. Gray, who owned land on both sides of the Schuylkill River, was elected to the Provincial Assembly during the American Revolutionary War, and he served as Chairman of the Board of War on the Committee of Safety, a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, and a Pennsylvanian delegate to the signing of the US Constitution in 1787. He died in 1800.
