Gelgill (died 878) was a Danish slave trader who lived in Dunholm during the 9th century.
Biography[]
Gelgill was a Danish slave trader who lived in Earl Kjartan's land of Dunholm, and he took Guthred as a slave after Kjartan captured him. In 878, Uhtred of Bebbanburg was sent by the Catholic Church to rescue Guthred, who was supposedly prophesied by Saint Cuthbert to be the Christian savior of all of England. Father Beocca, Father Trew, Hild, and Halig met with Gelgill at his camp one night to negotiate a deal, and their ally Uhtred of Bebbanburg and several masked lepers on horseback disrupted the negotiations while pretending to be undead spirits sent by Odin. This caused the Danish warriors at the camp to flee, and, before he could escape, Gelgill was stabbed in the back by Hild, whom he had suggested should be part of the price for Guthred's release.
