Gelder (born 313) was the chief of the Saxons from 363 until his death. Under his rule, the Saxons conquered Britannia (England and Wales) from the Western Roman Empire.
Biography[]
Gelder was born in Vicus Saxones in present-day Denmark to the Saxons, a Germanic people from Denmark and Sweden. To help establish his empire, he made an alliance with the Franks and made trade agreements with the Lombards and Burgundii. Eventually, Gelder led an invasion of Britannia in 371 AD, and conquered Londinium (London) from the Western Roman Empire. Soon, Eburacum (York) fell into Saxon hands, and the Anglo-Saxons (a mix of the ethnic Celts and the Saxons) formed.
Gelder had to quash a rebellion by the Romano-British leader Cadeyrn Wledic from 372 to 375, and warred with the Celts to the north. He was welcomed as a liberator by the people of Roman Britain, as he was also a pagan and was a native, like they were.
