The Geats were a North Germanic tribe that inhabited Gotaland in southern Sweden. The Geats launched frequent raids on Northern Europe, as they had naval access to the whole of northern Europe from their stronghold. King Gizur led an army of Geats into Europe to assist the Goths in exchange for Roman gold and goods, and the Geats profited from the violence in Roman Europe. From the 5th to 6th centuries, the Geats fought against the rival Swedes in alliance with the Scyldings, but their last king Beowulf was slain in 580 CE, leading to the Swedes taking over Geatland.
