Gates Fort

Gates Fort is a disused British Army fort in St. George's Parish, Bermuda. The fort was built in 1612 and named for Thomas Gates, who went on to serve as Jamestown's governor. Originally built in wood and later with limestone, the fort was meant to deter unauthorized vessels from approaching the island and to disrupt privateer and Spanish movements during the 17th century. The fort was rebuilt in the 1790s, but its keep was occupied by a local family from the 1870s to 1922 and the fort then returned to the government and restored by prison labor.
