Gardar Svavarsson (21 March 825-) was Chief of Norðland from 867.
Biography[]
Gardar Svavarsson was born in Sweden, and he owned land in Zealand, Denmark before marrying a woman from the Hebrides. During the 860s, he set out to claim his inheritance following the death of his father-in-law, but a storm blew his ship northwards and led to him becoming the first person to circumnavigate Iceland. He went ashore at Skjalfandi and founded a house at Husavik, establishing the chiefdom of Norðland.
