Garamantia was a confederation of Berber tribes in southwestern Libya which existed from 500 BC to 700 AD. They founded a number of city-states in the Fezzan area of Libya in the Sahara desert, and, in 202 AD, the Roman emperor Septimius Severus captured the Garamantian capital of Garama. By 700 AD, the Garamantians were conquered by the Umayyad Caliphate.
