During the Caucasian War, he became the Imam of the Caucasian Imamate following Ghazi Muhammad's death, and he attacked the pro-Russian and anti-Sufi Avar khans in 1834. He captured the Avar capital of Khunzakh and executed its female ruler and her sons, but Hadji Murad and other supporters of the Avar khans conspired against Gamzat-bek and killed him, leading to Imam Shamil becoming the third Caucasian imam.
