Gamaliel Bailey (3 December 1807 – 5 June 1859) was an American abolitionist journalist, editor, and publisher in Cincinnati and Washington DC.
Biography[]
Gamaliel Bailey was born in Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey in 1807, and he moved with his family to Philadelphia in 1816 bfore moving to Baltimore. He first edited an antislavery paper in Cincinnati, established the National Era in Washington DC in 1847, and used it to spread Salmon P. Chase's ideas and gain their acceptance by Liberty Party men throughout the country. His successor on the Cincinnati Weekly Herald, Stanley Matthews, also endorsed Chase's moderate position within the anti-slavery movement. His businesses were subjected to mob attacks during the 1840s, but he continued his activism until he died on the steamship Arago in 1859 while en route to Europe.
