Gallia Belgica
was a province of the Roman Empire located in the northeastern part of Gallia, with Augusta Treverorum serving as its capital. In 50 BC, following Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars, it became one of the three new Gallic provinces, the other two being Gallia Aquitania and Gallia Lugdunensis. In 22 BC, Emperor Augustus formally created the province, which was named for the Belgae confederation of the region. In 406, the Vandals, Alans, and Suebi crossed the Rhine into the Western Roman Empire and destroyed large parts of Gallia Belgica before eventually moving on to Hispania. In 452, the Roman victory at the Battle of the Catalaunian Fields forced the Huns to retreat from Gallia Belgica, which survived the fall of the Western Roman Empire as a part of the Domain of Soissons. Soissons was ultimately conquered by the Franks in 486.
