Gallia Aquitania was a province of the Roman Empire in southwest Gaul (France) which existed from 27 BC to 476 AD, with Burdigala (Bordeaux) serving as its capital. During his Gallic Wars in the 50s BC, the Roman general Julius Caesar subdued the Vivisci, Sotiates, Tarbelli, and Ausci and conquered Aquitania, and Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa crushed an Aquitanian rebellion in 38 BC and again from 28 to 27 BC. In 27 BC, Aquitania was formally annexed as a Roman province governed by a praetor. During the 460s and 470s, the Visigoths conquered Aquitania, which was fully absorbed after the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD.
