The Gallaeci were a large Celtic tribal federation which inhabited Galicia in the northwestern corner of the Iberian Peninsula. The Gallaeci did not adopt writing until their contact with the Romans, and some Gallaeci served as mercenaries for Carthage during the Punic Wars. The region was annexed by the Roman Empire under Emperor Augustus during the Cantabrian Wars of the late 1st century BC.
