Galata

Galata was one of four major districts of Istanbul during the Renaissance, located at the northern shore of the Golden Horn. The medieval citadel of Galata was a colony of the Republic of Genoa between 1273 and 1453, and the Genoese built the Galata Tower in 1348. During the Renaissance era, it was Istanbul's most cosmopolitan district, and it was full of varied architecture with Italian, Ottoman, Byzantine, Ancient Greek, and Asian influences; it became known as one of the richest districts of the city. Galatasaray SK, one of the most famous Turkish football clubs, originated in Galata in 1905.
