Gagik I of Armenia

Gagik I of Armenia (950-1020) was the king of Bagratid Armenia from 989 to 1020, succeeding Smbat II of Armenia and preceding Smbat III of Armenia.

Biography[]

Gagik I of Armenia was born in 950 to the Armenian Apostolic Church-adhering House of Bagrationi, and he was the son of Ashot III of Armenia. Gagik succeeded his brother Smbat II of Armenia as king of Bagratid Armenia in 989, and he allied with Gurgen of Iberia and Bagrat III of Georgia to defeat Emir Mamlan of Khorasan at Tsumb in 998. He was still recognized by the Abbasid Caliphate, and he died in 1020 leading a large kingdom.
