
Gabriel Holmes (1769-26 September 1829) was the Democratic-Republican Governor of North Carolina from 7 December 1821 to 7 December 1824 (succeeding Jesse Franklin and preceding Hutchins Gordon Burton) and a member of the US House of Representatives (D-NC 5) from 4 March 1825 to 26 September 1829 (succeeding Charles Hooks and preceding Edward Bishop Dudley).
Biography[]
Gabriel Holmes was born in Clinton, North Carolina in 1769, and he practiced law in his hometown before serving in the House of Commons from 1794 to 1795, in the State Senate from 1797 to 1802 and from 1812 to 1813, as Governor from 1821 to 1824, and in the US House of Representatives from 1825 to 1829. He was the father of Theophilus H. Holmes.
