Gabriel Duvall (6 December 1752 – 6 March 1844) was a member of the US House of Representatives (DR-MD 2) from 11 November 1794 to 28 March 1796 (succeeding John Francis Mercer and preceding Richard Sprigg Jr.) and an Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court from 18 November 1811 to 12 January 1835 (succeeding Samuel Chase and preceding Philip Pendleton Barbour).
Biography[]
Gabriel Duvall was born in Prince George's County, Maryland in 1752, and he became a lawyer in 1778, settling in Annapolis. He fought at the Battle of Brandywine during the American Revolutionary War and went on to serve in the House of Delegates from 1787 to 1794, in the US House of Representatives from 1794 to 1796, Chief Justice of the Maryland General Court from 1796 to 1802, as Comptroller of the Treasury from 1802 to 1811, and as an Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court from 1811 to 1835. He is often considered to be the most insignificant Supreme Court justice, and he died in 1844.
