Gabriel Boric (born 11 February 1986) was President of Chile from 11 March 2022, succeeding Sebastian Pinera.
Biography[]
Gabriel Boric was born in Punta Arenas, Chile in 1986 to a Croatian father and a Catalonian mother, and, while studying at the University of Chile, he became involved in the student movement and served as President of the University of Chile Student Federation from 2011 to 2012. In 2014, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies as an Autonomist Left candidate, although he later founded the Autonomist Movement. In 2018, he merged his party into the Social Convergence party, and, during the 2021 presidential election, he won the Apruebo Dignidad primary election against Communist politician Daniel Jadue in an upset, becoming the far-left's candidate for the presidency. In November 2021, he placed second in the first round of the presidential election, behind far-right candidate Jose Antonio Kast, advancing to the 19 December 2021 runoff. He defeated Kast with 55.9% of the vote, becoming the youngest president in Chile's history and the youngest state leader in the world.
