Biography[]

Fyodor Fyodorovich Ushakov was born in Burnakovo in Yaroslavl Guberniya, located in eastern European Russia, in 1745 to a modest family of minor nobility. In 1761 he joined the Russian Navy and fought against Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War when Britain attacked and searched ships loyal to the First League of Armed Neutrality, hoping to find French contraband.

He became the commander of Queen Catherine the Great's yacht, and later became a favorite of hers. During the Second Russo-Turkish War (1787-1792), he commanded the Russian Navy, crushing the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Tendra in 1790. In the course of 43 naval battles under his command he was undefeated and did not lose one ship.
