Fyodor Fyodorovich Buxhoewden (14 September 1750-23 August 1811), also known as Friedrich Wilhelm von Buxhoeveden, was a general of the Russian Empire

Biography[]

Buxhoewden was born to a Baltic German family, and was a government official of the Russian Empire. Buxhoewden took part in the crushing of the Kosciuszko Uprising of 1794, his first experience in warfare. A drillmaster who was frequently drunk, he took part in the Third Coalition war against Napoleon Bonaparte and the war against the Kingdom of Sweden over Finland. He was one of the generals at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, and due to his drunken behavior, he lost the battle.

Despite his drunkeness, Buxhoewden proved to be an extremely able commander in his campaigns against the Ottoman Empire. Marked by constant victories, his two campaigns (the Russo-Turkish War of 1805 and Russo-Turkish War of 1807) were extremely successful. He won Russia not only Moldova & Bessarabia and the protectorates of Romania and the Grecian Kingdom, but also military prestige.

Buxhoewden died in 1811 at the age of 61, due to alcoholism.
