The Future Movement is a liberal political party in Lebanon which was founded in 2007 by Saad Hariri, the son of assassinated Prime Minister Rafic Hariri. While it was officially secular, the economically liberal Future Movement was predominantly supported by the Sunni Muslims of Lebanon, often lacking in clear ideology and political vision and using sectarianism to appeal to Sunnis. During the Syrian Civil War, the movement had an increasing association with Sunni Islamist groups, and it consisted of both Salafist ultraconservatives and Sunni populists. In 2011, the party decried Hezbollah as a "terrorist party" and claimed that it was moving Lebanon toward the Iranian Shia theocratic system of government.
