Fujiwara Kunihira (1153-1186) was the daimyo of the Hiraizumi Fujiwara after the death of his father Fujiwara Hidehira. He fought against the Kamakura Minamoto as well as the Kubota Fujiwara, and died in battle with Minamoto Yoritomo. Kunihira was succeeded as daimyo by his relative Fujiwara Chikakage.
Biography[]
Kunihira was the first son of Fujiwara Hidehira and Fujiwara Miken, and one of his four sons, and became a general of the Fujiwara clan at a young age. In 1184, when his father died of illness, Kunihira became the new daimyo and continued his father's wars in central Japan. When the Minamoto declared war, he lost Shimotsuke Province but invaded and captured Shimosa Province briefly. But Minamoto Yoritomo took his army south and attacked Kunihira's army, which had left Shimosa shortly before its recapture. He was defeated twice, and the second time was fatal. He was killed along with heir Nijo Nobutsuna, Commissioner for Finance Fujiwara Tadahira, and Commissioner for Supply Fujiwara Yasuhira.
