Fujiwara Chikakage (born 1158) was the daimyo of the Hiraizumi Fujiwara from 1186 until his death. Chikakage succeeded his brother Fujiwara Kunihira on his death in battle with the Kamakura Minamoto.
Biography[]
Chikakage was the brother of Fujiwara Kunihira, the lord of the Hiraizumi Fujiwara branch of the Fujiwara clan. Upon the death of his brother in the Battle of Shimosa in 1186 with the Kamakura Minamoto, Chikakage became the new daimyo of the Hiraizumi clan and Lord of Mutsu Province and Hiraizumi Castle. He continued the war with the Minamoto, rejecting peace overtures, and he had to be subdued by military force. In spring 1188 Chikakage was defeated in Fukushima Province by Minamoto Yoritomo. Later that year, he agreed to become a vassal of the Minamoto clan and in 1188 was aided in the civil war with the Kubota Fujiwara when the Minamoto conquered Miyagi Province and Uzen Province from the Kubota Fujiwara, forcing them to accept vassal status. In 1190, he sided with Emperor Go-Toba during the Kenkyu War and betrayed the Minamoto for the Emperor.
