FALN

Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional Puertorriqueña (FALN), meaning the Armed Forces of Puerto Rican National Liberation, was a Marxist-Leninist clandestine paramilitary organization that existed in Puerto Rico from 1974 to 1983. Led by Filiberto Ojeda Rios and Oscar Lopez Rivera, the FALN was responsible for 120 bomb attacks on United States targets, killing 5 people and injuring several others. In 1983, the FALN was taken down after most of its members were arrested for robbery conspiracies and for firearms and explosives violations, and US president Bill Clinton offered amnesty to sixteen imprisoned FALN members if they renounced violence. Lopez would become known as a famous political prisoner and Puerto Rican hero, and he was released from house arrest in May 2017.
