The Frisii were a Germanic tribe which inhabited the Frisia region of the Netherlands from the 4th century BC to 400 AD. The Frisii settled along the North Sea in the 4th century BC and controlled the land between Bremen and Bruges, and they halted a Roman advance in the 1st century BC and therefore maintained their independence. The Frisii joined the Franks and the Saxons in the late Roman Empire, and those who did not resettled in Flanders and Kent. They are the ancestors of most of the modern Dutch, who still inhabit the Frisia region. The modern Frisians from the Dutch province of Friesland/Frisia are more Jutes and Saxons, although commonly confused with being descendants of the Frisii, because of the name.
