Biography[]
Friedrich Baum was born in 1727 in Brunswick-Luneburg, and he arrived in Canada in 1776 as a Lieutenant-Colonel of Brunswick dragoons that were hired as "Hessians" by Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War. Baum set out with 800 troops and two pieces of artilley to procure cattle and horses to mount Friedrich-Adolf Riedesel's cavalry during the Saratoga Campaign. On 18 August 1777, Baum engaged John Stark's New Hampshire militia at the Battle of Bennington, and his dragoons on the high ground made a stand for two hours until they ran out of ammunition. Baum fell mortally wounded in the battle, a crippling blow to British morale.
