The Frente Popular (English: Popular Front) was a left-wing coalition of Spanish politics that existed from January 1936 to 1939. On 19 February 1936 it gained control of the Second Spanish Republic with Miguel Azana as its leader, and it gained opposition from the Falange and right-wing parties in politics. The coalition's supporters, ranging from liberals and anti-fascists to socialists and communists, fought against the Falange and the fascist organizations of Spain, and it was defeated in the Spanish Civil War of July 1936-March 1939, ending in their total defeat and destruction despite assistance from the Soviet Union and the International Brigades. The Frente Popular's leadership mostly fled to either Russia or Latin America, and Francisco Franco ruled Spain as a dictator until 1975.
