In 1550, Jean de Caroline and a French expeditionary force (including priests, diplomats, traders, and Indian scouts) landed in Florida to claim the cities of gold and people made of jewels rumored to scatter the Americas region. In 1559 he captured the area from the native rebels and set up Fort Caroline as his capital.

Early Years[]

The French did not come into contact with the Spanish for years. Even when the Spanish took over southern Florida, they made no attempts to open diplomacy.
