French Foreign Legion

The French Foreign Legion is a service branch of the French Army that was founded on 10 March 1831 so that foreign individuals could fight for France. The zouaves were some of the most notable Foreign Legion soldiers, being Algerians who would join the French military during French rule over North Africa. Legionnaires have come from across the world and have fought across the world, with 40,000 Legionnaires dying in the service of France. In 2016, there were 7,700 troops from 140 countries serving in the Foreign Legion, and the legion has a rule that states that any soldier injured in combat will automatically become a citizen of France.
