The French Communist Party (PCF) is a Marxist-Leninist communist party in France, founded on 30 December 1920 as a splintergroup of the French Section of the Workers' International. From 1945 to 1960, the PCF was the largest left-wing party in France, and it supported the protesters during the civil unrest of May 1968. During the 1970s, the PCF was surpassed in strength by the Socialist Party of France, but it would remain the third-largest party by 2012 after The Republicans and the Socialist Party. In 2016, it held 7/577 National Assembly seats, 17/348 Senate seats, 2/74 European Parliament seats, and 95/1,880 Regional Council seats.
