Fred Henderson

Fred Henderson (1915-13 June 1944) was a Corporal of the US Army pathfinders during World War II. Henderson served with the US 101st Airborne Division, 501st PIR, 1st Battalion, Easy Company during the Operation Overlord invasion of Normandy.

Biography[]

During the drop, he missed his unit and instead joined Captain Jennings to defend the bridge in the city of Ramelle. During their stay in Ramelle, the Germans bombed them with 88s, killing their commander, Captain Jennings, handing over command to Henderson. Some time before the battle, the paratroopers were joined by a group of six rangers under the command of Captain John Miller, who took command. When the battle began, Henderson used an M1919 machine gun, killed many Germans, but when his ammunition ran out, he was cut off from the rest of the people and was fatally wounded in the neck with an MP40 by Waffen-SS soldier.
