Franz Halder (30 June 1884 – 2 April 1972) was Chief of the OKH General Staff of the German Wehrmacht from 1938 until September 1942 during World War II. Halder was a key figure in the first resistance movement against Hitler to form in the officer corps during 1938, but it came to nothing.
Biography[]
Halder was made chief of the General Staff in 1938, despite his opposition to Hitler. He planned and oversaw the invasion of Poland and Western Europe, although he argued that the latter should be postponed. Halder served until 1942, when he was replaced and later imprisoned after being implicated in the Operation Valkyrie bomb plot of 20 July 1944.
