Frankie Berberi was born in New York City, New York to a family of Italian descent, and he came to own his own cigar shop, Smoke Signals, in Little Italy. He was known for celling high quality cigars, and the Cuneo crime family associate Manny Calamari ran a smuggling operation from the back room of the shop. In August 1945, Corleone associate Aldo Trapani paid Berberi a visit and forced him to change allegiances to the Corleone family.
