Frank McLaury

Robert Findley "Frank" McLaury (3 March 1849 – 26 October 1881) was an American outlaw of the Wild West and a member of the Cochise County Cowboys gang. He and his brother Tom, along with Billy Clanton, were killed in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

Biography[]

Robert Findley McLaury was born in Kortright, Delaware County, New York on 3 March 1849, the older brother of Tom McLaury, and one of 11 children born to a Scots-Irish family. The family moved to Belle Plaine, Iowa in 1855, and they later moved to a farm near present-day Hazelton Township in Buchanan County, 50 miles north of Belle Plaine. In 1878, Frank and Tom moved to Fort Worth, Texas, and then to Hereford, Arizona where they became ranchers and befriended Ike Clanton and his family. The McLauries became associates of the Cochise County Cowboys outfit, and, on 25 July 1880, they stole a pair of US Army mules before they were busted by the Earps. The McLauries and Clantons both came to hate the Earps, and, on 26 October 1881, they rode into the town of Tombstone with guns, defying the town's recent gun control measures. The Earps and Doc Holliday went to confront them at the O.K. Corral, where they attempted to disarm the Cowboys. However, Billy Clanton drew his gun, leading to a shootout. McLaury was the last to be killed in the shootout, with Morgan Earp shooting McLaury in the head before McLaury could shoot Holliday.
