Frank M. Dixon

Frank Murray Dixon (25 July 1892-11 October 1965) was the Democratic Governor of Alabama from 17 January 1939 to 19 January 1943, succeeding Bibb Graves and preceding Chauncey Sparks.

Biography[]

Frank Murray Dixon was born in Oakland, California in 1892, and he was raised in Virginia and Washington DC before becoming a lawyer in Birmingham, Alabama. He volunteered for the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War I, and, after the war, he became a corporate lawyer in Birmingham. He served as Governor from 1939 to 1943, streamlining the state government by eliminating redundant departments, establishing tenure and retirement for teachers, implementing a meritocracy, and increasing barge traffic in Mobile by 400% by reorganizing the docks after World War II. He went on to become a conservative lobbyist, lobbying for a right-to-work law and attending the Dixiecrats' Birmingham convention in 1948. He died in 1965.
