Biography[]
Francis James Ivancie was born in Marble, Minnesota, the son of a Slovenian immigrant father, and he served in the US Air Force during World War II. After the war, he worked as a teacher in Burns, Oregon, and he later worked as a principal in Orenco and as a teacher in Portland before becoming an executive assistant to Mayor Terry Schrunk. He served as a City Commissioner from 1967 to 1980 and as Mayor from 1980 to 1985. While Ivancie's tenure was scandal-free, he was a pro-business, conservative mayor leading a progressive city, creating controversy. He lost re-election in 1984, and he campaigned for Ronald Reagan before retiring to California, where he died in 2019.
