Franconia is a region of southern Germany located in the present-day Bavaria federated state. With large cities at Nuremberg, Wurzburg, and Bayreuth, Franconia has had a rich history, being named for the Franks, whose East Francia kingdom created the Duchy of Franconia. In 1803, due to the Duchy of Bavaria's alliance with Napoleon, Bavaria was able to add Franconia to its domain as a result of the French Revolutionary Wars. By 2016, Franconia had a population of around 5,000,000 people.
